happenings and thoughts from the brick house on the corner

this is us.

this is us.
this is us in spain.
this is us learning how to work better as a team.
this is us learning how to live in the moment.
this is us making each other laugh.
this is us being completely grateful.
this is us being best friends.
this is us in spain.
this is us.

and we’re back.

there are pictures to upload and edit, laundry to sort and groceries to buy. mostly, there’s lots of sleeping to be done. four cities in nine days was a whirlwind. an awesome, unforgetable, whirlwind.

dinner for leni

so my friend from work made it through her complete mastectomy successfully today, which means she’s getting close kicking butt in her cancer battle. chemo- check. surgery- check. radiation- pending.

we’re all making dinners for her family for the next 3 weeks while she recovers. tonight housemate and i made our first round- shepherd’s pie. at first i was really concerned about making something the family would like, but i got over that. like mom says, if you’re hungry, you’ll eat.

housemate and i actually had a lot of fun making dinner to send their way tomorrow. we picked up all organic ingredients, including hormone free meat as requested. i’ve seriously been considering changing up what we purchase at the grocery store, as milk is the only item we’re picky about when it comes to artificial horomones, antibiotics, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. it was good to do a little research and see how much more it costs to buy organic, so that we can make some informed decisions if we make the transition. (*you can maybe see in the picture that i also bought boxed organic wine, which made no sense because it’s not like i’m sending a carafe of wine over with dinner. i had a theme, and i was sticking with it, damn it.) housemate’s uncle has had his own for-profit 100% organic farming operation since the mid-70s in Idaho. we keep wanting to take a trip out there, and i think seeing all his work would really help us make said transition.

anyway, tonight we got to spend an hour catching up on things with each other while doing something for a friend. i signed us up to provide a dinner a week, and am really looking forward to next week’s installment. win/win x 3.

keep calm

i pretty much hate all of the “keep calm” graphics any more, but i guarantee we would have loved this in college.

nearly flawless

when i describe something as being “nearly flawless,” this doesn’t come to mind:

fifty bucks, boo.

and everybody learns your game round here, and that’s alright
* * *
put a record on, found something you ain’t never heard
honey everybody knows that song round here, and that’s alright
ain’t no such thing as waiting too long round here, and that’s alright
and i told you if you stayed round here you might end up by my side…
{so come on out tonight.}

chalk it up.

i felt cheesy a couple of weeks ago when i slapped some chalkboard paint up against the back of our kitchen cabinets, because i know it’s pretty overdone. but then i watched a few videos of dana tanamachi’s work for west elm, and decided i didn’t care.

my first shot at lettering up on the wall wasn’t great because, well, it’s difficult. but it was the most stress-free activity i’ve participated in for months, so for now i’m going with it. i’m planning on doing a new one each month. hopefully i’ll get better over time?
